Celebrating a birthday with a dinner: how to organize an evening everyone will talk about for a long time
Celebrating a birthday in a restaurant is fun and saves on cleaning up. With these tips, you can arrange the place, the bill, and the surprise without the birthday party becoming a chore.

Celebrating a birthday with a dinner is the ideal way for many people: together at the table, no one has to cook, and no dishes afterwards. It does require some organization, especially with a larger group. Here is how you handle it.
1. Start with the number and the date
How many people are coming approximately, and on which evening? Those two things determine which restaurants are eligible. For a group of ten or more, you often need a place that can set up larger tables or has a separate room.
2. Choose a place that suits the birthday person
It's about the birthday person, not the organizer. Do they like a quiet, long evening or something lively and cozy? Sharing dishes or a set menu? Ask carefully, or check with someone who knows well.
3. Book on time and mention the occasion
For groups on a Friday or Saturday, it pays to book well in advance. Tell them when booking that it is a birthday. Many restaurants are happy to help, for example with a candle in the dessert, or with a fixed group menu that makes the evening go smoother.
4. Agree on the bill in advance
The most awkward moment of a group dinner is often the bill. Therefore, agree in advance how you will handle it:
Does the birthday person pay, or does everyone pay for themselves?
Does the group cover the birthday person's bill together?
Or does one person pay and the rest transfer it afterwards?
Ask the restaurant if they can split the bill; that is not possible everywhere for large groups.
5. Surprise? Keep it simple
A surprise dinner is fun, but makes the organization more difficult. Use a group app without the birthday person, agree on one point of contact, and make sure everyone is on time.
The best birthday dinners don't feel organized. That's because someone has arranged everything in advance.
